Common Hair Myths

Some sayings are passed from one generation to another but that doesn't necessarily mean they are true. Here is the truth about some common hair myths.

There are several rumors about hair that have been passed on from generation to generation but some of them might not be true. Here are some common hair myths that most of us heard about:

  • Cutting your hair will make it grow faster and thicker

False. Cutting hair cannot change the growth rate and the texture of the hair. The only thing that it does is it gives the hair more texture through the cut and gets rid of split ends which can cause hair to grow at a slower rate.

  • You can get rid of split ends without trimming your hair

False. Cutting split ends is the only way to remove them. You can prevent developing split ends by properly taking care of your hair.

  • Hair grows at different rates

True. It has been proven that hair can grow at different rates on different parts of the head, but the growth difference is not very noticeable.

  • Smoking can cause gray hairs

True. An article published in England affirms that smokers are 4 times more likely to develop gray hairs that people who don't smoke.

  • The only way to get rid of gray hairs is with permanent dye.

False. You can cover gray hairs using semi-permanent or natural hair dye as well. These dyes will not stay as long on as the permanent dye but at least they don't contain so many chemicals.

  • Rinse out conditioners don't do much for the hair because they are rinsed out

False. Rinse out conditioners help the hair feel softer and look shinier because of the moisturizing effect.

  • Tight braids can cause hair loss

True. Tension from the tight braids can cause hair loss over a long period of time. To avoid hair loss or breakage try to wear your braids looser so there is less traction on the hair.

  • Sleeping with your hair wet can cause a fungal infection

False. Wet hair cannot cause your scalp to develop any type of fungus. The only way to get it is if you have direct contact with the fungus.

  • Washing your hair on a daily basis make it dry

False. The only way you dry your hair if you wash it daily is if you use the wrong shampoo. Using the proper shampoo and conditioner won't dry your hair out even if it's washed daily.

  • Swimming pool chemicals can cause blonde hair to turn green

True. Some swimming pools contain copper in the water. These metals can adhere to the hair strand and deposit their color. To prevent copper to bind to your hair condition hair well before you go swimming.
