How to Color Hair When Allergic to Dye

Are you allergic to hair dye or looking for natural and healthy alternatives for store-bought hair dyes? Find out what are your options and how to color your hair when allergic to hair dyes!

Hair dyes contain many chemicals that can damage our hair, and in some unfortunate cases can produce allergic reactions. The symptoms of allergic reactions are usually: itching, rashes on the eyes, face and ears and even facial swelling. If you are allergic to hair dye there are only two options left. You can either stop coloring your hair or you can use natural hair dye made from Henna or Indigo.

Henna is a flowering plant native to the tropical and subtropical parts of Africa and southern Asia which produces a red-orange dye known as hennotannic acid or lawsone. The henna leaves are grounded mixed with water and turned into a paste which is applied on the hair. The result of this procedure will be red dyed hair. Some ingredients can be mixed along with the henna paste to darken or brighten the red color. Apple cider vinegar or lemon juice can be added to obtain highlights.

Indigo or Indigofera tinctoria is a common plant also called black henna but so are other products that can harm your hair. Make sure you buy natural indigo powder. The indigo paste will dye your hair black. To begin you should dye your hair first with henna. Apply the mixture of water and indigo just after you rinsed. The indigo paste consistency should be like sour cream only lumpy. Leave the indigo paste on for at least two hours. The longer it stays on the darker the hair will get.

Rinse the indigo out of your hair and the results will show completely after one day.
